CUSTOM FLOOR CLOTHS

GUEST BLOG:  Susan of Billington Designs    www.billingtondesigns.comOver the last two years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Dale in her client’s unique 18th century historical home.  In the kitchen, we created a 3-panel landscape painting for a prominent wall, and most recently, two canvas floor cloths that incorporate the Early American style that is evident throughout the house.

Dale and her clients first discussed having the functional floor cloths custom made and that I could create appropriate, traditional designs that would coordinate with the décor.

Seaside Bermuda Style

Inspiration to create your own home’s beautiful look.  This is especially cool in a sun-filled room.

  • Start with the walls and don’t forget the ceilings.

The ceiling is your fifth wall.  From warm pink sands to clear turquoise ocean waters, this wall covering pays homage to its tropical namesake, Bermuda Hemp. Fresh with a nod to casual chic, natural hemp is hand woven and laminated atop a selection of colored paper backings for an unique shadow effect. The colors are fresh, up-to-date and echo the island’s bright and breezy surrounds; as well as the natural landscape.  Philip Jeffries

Wilton, Connecticut Interior Designer feels the love.

New Testimonial

My home had very difficult rooms to decorate, that I had struggled with for years.  I’m most excited about my results as the decorating “suits” me and looks appropriate to the house.  The biggest personal benefit after working with Dale is I no longer have to look at ugly rooms!  The best part of working with Dale was there was timely completion of the project and absolute satisfaction with the results.  I would definitely recommend Dale to others.  I was completely satisfied.  There was time pressure and it all got done on time.  Good work and on time delivery, no need to improve on that.  I would tell anyone considering working with Dale to just come and look at my rooms!  Karen, Wilton Connecticut

Rethinking a View of Empty Nest in Wilton, Connecticut

empty_nest

Many Baby Boomers continue to transition as the children leave the home.   Vibrant homeowners are turning this transition into an opportunity. There is a renewed sense of romance and self-nurturing; and they want to accommodate an active second-lease-on-life phase in their homes.

True, some boomers are “downsizing”; but not necessarily in ways that you think.  “Downsizing” may be less square footage, but it definitely does not mean fewer amenities.  Other boomers are “up-scaling” knowing it’s time to reclaim the home and make it their own.  Or, maybe they are free to fly the nest themselves and finally move to the larger ‘dream’ home.

No matter the choice, less stressful, clutter free, easier to manage homes with spaces for a ‘growing’ family is all on the must have list.  Whether it’s a second home, a new home or the home where the family was raised, Boomers want spaces that their adult children, their respective ‘significant others’ and their grand children will come to visit.  “Old” friends, siblings and other company will be cheerfully welcomed too.

Recreation, private areas and home offices (one statistic states that boomers will work until they’re 80) will round out the must haves.  An empty bedroom may now become a home office to launch that new business.  Adding a room may support the development of a new hobby.  Flexible sleeping and bathing arrangements can handle multiple family and/or friend visits.  Wine enthusiasts may finally have the opportunity to build a wine cellar.   Home theaters, exercise rooms and outdoor living spaces allow  for leisurely pastimes.

It’s their turn to update and refresh by making their homes beautiful and pleasing to fit their lifestyle.  New needs, new desires and new dreams is the rethinking about the views on the empty nest.

Redecorating and reworking a guest bedroom allows this homeowner to enjoy friends visiting, grandchildren, watching television and even yoga on her new central carpet.  Additional shelf space added storage.  email Dale @ dale@daleminske.com

Interior Design Inspiration

image

Visiting the lamp shade store in Fairfield County today, found these beautiful, uniquely painted shades.  Interior designers love providing interest to their client’s home.  This pattern can be reversed to  the inside, as a ceiling light, in a foyer or over a table. As a shade on a floor lamp,  look for a base with texture to compliment the smooth silver color ground.  Its beauty is amazing when lit.

New For Spring 2011

…and aren’t we all looking forward to spring.

New York Gift Show has arrived!  The buzz is on in the interior design and decoration world as we get a glimpse of what’s new in accessories and furnishings.  After a full day of the show in New York, here are some of my favorites….

These mats are for outside use!  Passing by the booth, I thought this was just another rug showroom.  No, these rugs are for outside use, but look like inside quality.  Unbelievable colors and soft to the feet!  Plus, they are made from 100% recyclable materials. …talk about green and beautiful!!

Next stop, a more subtle but stunning look that melds luxury with practicality.   Trays hand decorated in the spirit of 18th Century Europe can be used on a stand or would be excellent on a fabric ottoman to hold that beverage since it has special glazing (okay, I would use a coaster too!) for protection.

Displaying Collections in Interior Design and Decoration

The Power of Three

Even if you only have a few items, three or more of the same kind of object can instantly mean a ‘collection.’

No matter what your collection, one designer technique is to present groupings in multiples of three to create the most visual appeal and impact.  Information, colors and objects that appear in threes are more interesting, memorable and balanced.  Balance is an important aspect of good design because it pleases the eye and creates a sense of harmony.

Artwork

Hanging wall art in multiples of three is much more interesting than a single framed piece.  Try hanging three framed art pieces, of the same size, in a row.  Or, you can use one larger piece flanked by two smaller pieces on each side stacked one over the other.  In this case, the total pieces equal five, yet the division in space remains three for a balanced appearance.

Remember, that all three pieces used on the wall do not need to be the same.  For instance, one large mirror with wall sconces on either side provides a lovely effect.

Accessories

The power of three is most effective when placing collections on tabletops.  Carrying through a common theme with varying heights and weights of the objects provides the most visual appeal.  For instance, seaside it may include glass and ceramic vases with a collection of seashells and sea grass.

Seaside Collection

Pillows

You can also use multiples of three when placing throw pillows.  Varying the sizes, shapes, fabrics and trims, all with a unifying theme, such as color, makes for a beautiful arrangement.

Including a throw blanket draped over a sofa, with a large and small pillow is another interesting way to create the power of three.  In a traditional setting, two pillows on one side may be balanced with a larger pillow at the opposite end of a sofa.

On a dining table

On a dining table, a fine way to display silver or any collection is with a central large piece, flanked with tall candles.  No need to stop there, as long as the collections provide the balance of three.  Try three small bud vases on each side of the large middle piece or a collection of salt and pepper shakers can be interestingly displayed.  For a casual look, include a plant or floral in a beautiful planter in the middle and informal candles.  Candlelight at dinner does not need to be reserved for formal affairs.

Display your favorite pottery on a side table.

In the kitchen

An attractive display for the kitchen that’s one of my favorite groupings of three to tuck in a corner is to include from your favorite china collection, a large platter on a plate stand with a large bowl of fruit and water pitcher in front.  Even smaller items, e.g. salt and pepper and sugar bowl, can be put further in front making them beautiful and convenient at the same time.   In the kitchen, not only can you increase the ambiance, but highlight a small collection in multiples of three with a small lamp placed in a darker corner counter top.  Perfectly fitting for a kitchen includes your collection of oil jars, canisters, or fruit and vegetables.

In the powder room

Even if not collectibles, you can display your every day toiletries in a decorative fashion.  Include a beautiful soap dispenser, hand cream, special perfume bottle, a candle or a special fresh floral in a vase.  Collectibles displayed in a powder room can include small items on a shelf, baskets for magazines, tissue and garbage, mirrors or even special towels hung in a pattern of three.

Groupings of three, or multiples of three, will always be the most visually pleasing.  The possibilities are endless.

My personal collections include angels at Christmas, my Father’s gift to my Mother of tea cups and saucers from around the world, antique British maps, floral and bird prints, and native hand made bowls and tiles from our travels…. to name a few.

I would love to see your collection(s).  Please post your pictures.

Seaside BERMUDA Style

The latest collection from the decorative textile manufacturer (to the trade), Lee Jofa, celebrates the sights, sounds, and tastes of Bermuda with bold new florals, stripes and vivid solids.  The historic Verdmont manor house sitting high on the bluffs of Smith’s Parish provides the inspiration.

My delight at this new collection was enhanced as last autumn my husband treated me to a long weekend in Bermuda that included a tour of this nicely preserved historic home.   He’s a great guy enjoying these tours on my behalf.  See him smiling in the picture outside the property that truly has an amazing wide view of the turquoise blue sea.

The Challenge of High Ceilings

High ceilings add rich spaciousness to a room.  Today, many homes have this dramatic architectural component.  Yet, soaring ceilings present a unique challenge for those wanting a warm and welcoming room.  So, how do you create a cozy, comfortable ambiance in a room that can feel barren, empty and uninviting with tall ceilings?
